About Ugadi:
Ugadi marks the beginning of a new era and a New Hindu Lunar calendar. The festival of Ugadi is celebrated on the first day of the Chaitra Masa (month). Ugadi in Sanskrit means the beginning of an era. According to Mythology it is belived that Brahma, the creator, began the cereation of the Cosmos on
this day and then created days, months, years and the vital elements of nature to count time, based on the movements of planets and stars.
In Vishnu Purana, Lord Vishnu takes “Matsya Avatharam” which is one of the 10 incarnations of Vishnu and kills the demon ( Somakasura) . Later Lord Vishnu returns vedas to Brahma and Brahma started creating the world on Ugadi, which means beginning of year/age.
Great events have occurred on the day of Ugadi as it is said to be one of the 3 most important and auspicious days in a year. They are the day of Ugadi, the day of Vijayadashami, and both half day the Bali Padyami and Akshya Tritiya.
Sri Ramachandra was coronated in Ayodhya on the day of Ugadi, the great king of Southern India king shalivahana whose name has been given to an entire era was also caronated on the day of Ugadi.
In India we follow both the lunar calendar and the solar calendar. In state like Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra and Gujarat Ugadi is celebrated according to lunar calendar and in states like Tamil Nadu, Kerala and many states in North India follow the solar calendar. Ugadi is known by different names in different states.
On Festival days, people in India wake up before sunrise, they start day with a holy oil bath early in the morning and wear new clothes. The health benefits of ABHYANGA or ABHYANJANA ie. taking hot water bath after an elaborate oil massage of the whole body is a time tested health practice in Ayurveda which has established this as a most therapeutic and relaxing ways to maintain good health.
People worship God invoking his blessings before they start off with the New Year. They pray for their Health, Wealth and Prosperity and success in business too. Ugadi is also the most auspicious time to start new ventures. After the customary Puja of “Ishta Devata” the consumption of neem and jaggery is the very highlight of this day. The neem and Jaggery, the bitter and the sweet taste stand as representation of the two extreme poles of our life the success and failure and the amalgamation of both on the first day of the new year, tells us to take both in equal stride.
Another important aspect of this day is the reading and listening of Hindu almanac PANCHANGA SHRAVANA.
The arrival of festival days year after year and their celebrations are symbolic of what occurs in our life.
That nothing is static and all things keeps coming back in cycles is an important thing. This also tells us that whether it is joy or sorrow, pain or pleasure, success or failure, nothing is permanent, but keeps coming. The consumption of “Bevu Bella” or Neem and Jaggery, is the symbolic representation, that we need to take both pain and pleasure, success and failure, together and move on in life. The fact that the year closes and with the next year another ugadi comes, gives us the hope of future.
Let us all celebrate this festival and hope for better days.
